In an effort to reduce colds and illnesses spread between children, Prime Time Early Learning Center in Paramus recently re-painted its five shared hallway bathrooms using Sherwin-Wiliams proprietary Paint Shield ® microbiocidal paint. Paint Shield microbicidal paint is the first ever US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) registered interior latex paint that kills 99.9% of bacteria that lands on it, including Staph (staphylococcus aureus), E.coli (Escherichia coli), VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococcus faecalis), MRSA and certain other bacteria within two hours of exposure on a painted surface. This helps to prevent the spreading of germs when children and adults sneeze, cough or touch walls in these relatively confined spaces, that are shared by other children. Paint Shield was specifically developed by Sherwin-Williams to be applied in health care facilities, athletic facilities, schools and day-care centers.
Paint Shield paint is patented, and passed rigorous EPA test protocols conducted by third party labs. It reportedly continues to kill 90% of bacteria for up to four years after being applied as long as the integrity of the painted surface is maintained. Paint Shield underwent vigorous scrubbing tests and repeated exposure tests to ensure it maintains its effectiveness month after month when exposed to normal wear and tear, cleaning and scrubbing.
Paint Shield paints are considerably more expensive to apply than regular paints. There is also at least one 2017 scientific study that calls into question the effectiveness of anti-bacterial paints. Prime Time will poll and do outreach to parents in our Paramus, Edgewater, Hoboken and East Rutherford NJ schools, and our Middletown and Farmingdale NY schools to see how important it is to them to have anti-bacterial microbicidal paints applied in bathrooms and other center rooms when these rooms require re-painting. Based on parent interest at our schools, anti-bacterial paints may be applied in bathrooms, hallways and gym rooms on regular re-painting cycles. Paint Shield is available in 550 colors at all Sherwin-Williams stores, and will provide the same anti-bacterial benefits if applied in homes and other buildings.
