Prime Time Centers Hold Warm Coat Drive For Families in Need

Coats for Kids Drive

In December 2018, all six Prime Time Early Learning Centers in New York and New Jersey held coat drives for financially challenged families and the homeless. Many people lack enough warm clothing to stay protected throughout the winter and lack the money to buy that clothing.  Health experts report that even a 2-degree drop in body temperature results in reduced heart rate, loss of coordination, and confusion.  Adults cannot work effectively and children find it difficult to learn.  For most, a warm coat solves the problem.  But for the nearly 15% of Americans living in poverty, a warm winter coast is a budget “extra”.   Organizations such as One Warm Coat ( support individuals and organizations that want support and guidance to run a successful coast drive, and work to raise awareness of the need for more people to look inside their closet to find an excess coast they can share.

A coat drive for the less fortunate is a charitable project that anyone can lead. It’s well suited for:

  • Grandparents looking for developmental activities to do with their grandchildren
  • People looking to add a philanthropic component to an upcoming family gathering or party
  • Community members looking to give back during the winter months
  • People who would like a reason to get together with neighbors to support their communities
  • Professionals who would like to engage their colleagues in a good cause
  • People who may be moving or looking for ways to recycle
  • Those who want to help the homeless and less fortunate, but who don’t have the financial resources to contribute or support them in other ways.

The goal of a coat drive is simple; to provide any person in need with a warm coat, free of charge. For many of the 45 million Americans are living in poverty each winter they have to decide between paying their bills and buying food for their families – a warm coat is a budget extra they simply cannot afford.  Families with children make up 35% of the occupants of homeless shelters nationwide.  Prime Time’s primary mission and passion to support the healthy and happy development of young children, which makes a coat drive a perfect match for the charitable generosity of our families and staff.  Collected coats are then inspected for cleanliness and serviceability, then donated to Homeless Shelters, Halfway Homes, Youth Shelters and Women’s Shelters in the communities our Prime Time Centers serve.

40% or more of the heat lost from a person’s body is through their head and hands so in addition to collecting and donating coats, Prime Time Early Learning Centers purchases one pair of gloves or a new hat for each person or family that receives a donated coat.   Keeping heads and hands warm is as important to personal well being and productivity in the winter months as having a warm coat; it is important that young children show up to child care, PreK or school warm, focused and ready to learn.  Prime Time’s corporate giving philosophy of purchasing hats and gloves directly supports the generosity of all the families and staff members who give so generously of themselves during their coat drives.

In 2018 Prime Time Early Centers collected and distributed more than 200 coats for those in need, as well as 200 pairs of gloves.  Prime Time East Rutherford was especially successful in their coat drive this year, collecting 75 coats at their center from their families and staff living in Rutherford, Carlstadt, Wood-Ridge,  Lyndhurst and Moonachie NJ.
